Transport Boston

Walking, biking and the subway are convenient ways to get around. Boston is often referred to as "the walking city." The city is full of historic streets and architecture, much of which remain preserved today, you will learn much about Boston's history and discover what life was like during walking tours. Yet walking is not the only mode of transportation in Boston. Using the subway, buses, taxis and boats are also convenient ways to move around the city. For longer trips, Boston is home to Logan International Airport.

Public Transport

Public transit in Boston is convenient and relatively inexpensive, and can take you directly to most everything. The subway and bus routes serving Boston Logan International Airport are operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority also known as the MBTA or the "T". Currently the MBTA is a token-operated system (1 token costs $1.25) that is phasing in a stored value card system. The Charlie card system minimum is $5, so most visitors will want to use the MBTA on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Boston by Subway

Nearly all popular destinations are no more than a 10-minute walk from the nearest subway station. The T subway system is comprised of the Blue, Orange, Green, Red, and even part of the Silver Line. Riders can travel anywhere on the system in any direction for the same low fare. The Red Line and Green Line are the most useful for seeing the sights. Getting to and from Logan Airport the Blue Line and Silver Line can be used best. Fare is $1.25 for most rides.

Boston by Bus

Regular bus service is usually cheaper than rapid transit and may take you close to your final destination. Express buses more expensive, are faster and travel longer distances. The T Bus system is comprised of Local, Inner Express, Outer Express Buses and even part of the Silver Line.

MBTA Harbour Express

MBTA Harbour Express is a water shuttle that makes a convenient 7-minute trip across the harbor from Logan to the city, and is a convenient option if you are staying at a Waterfront or Financial District hotel. Tickets are sold on the boat.
