London has one of the most comprehensive public transport systems in the world.
London Underground - The Tube
The London Underground, or 'the Tube' as it is universally known in london is an easy and quick method of transport even for new visitors to London. You can pick up Tube maps freely upon any Tube station. You can plan your route online with Transport for London's Journey Planner. London's transport map is divided into six concentric zones with Zones 1 and 2 in Central London and Zone 6 covering the outer edge of the capital. You should consider an Oyster card and/or a Travelcard to get the best fares and beat the queues.
London by Bus
London's iconic red buses are recognized all over the world. The buses providing plenty of sightseeing opportunities and are generally quicker for short trips, than taking the Tube. There is a flat fare throughout the bus network, £1 with a pre-pay Oyster card and £2 if you are paying by cash. Travelcards are also valid on buses.
London by Car
There is really no good reason whatsoever to drive a car in central London. Take public transport in the centre, like Londoners do. Parking can be difficult, particularly in Central London. Restrictions typically apply between 8.30am and 6.30pm Monday to Friday and from 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays. It is legal to drive in Britain with a valid driving licence from outside the UK for up to 12 months from the time of arrival. Unlike many other countries, in the UK they drive on the left.
London by Boat
Thames riverboat services are becoming more and more popular, they are a great way of beating the traffic while soaking up fantastic views. Boats are operated by private companies and they have a separate ticketing system from the rest of London transport. If you have a Travelcard you get a 33% discount on most boat tickets.
