Like other tourist centres, Rome has its fair share of accommodations, in all price ranges. It may still have cheaper accommodations than London or New York, but rates for comparable establishments have caught up. Prices are set by the state, and all Rome hotels are supposed to display the official rate on the door of each room. Hotels in Rome generally have low and high season rates, so it is often worth bargaining, especially in the winter and after Christmass when the competition is less strong.

Budget hotels and Mid-range

Hostels offer one of the cheapest type of accommodation in Rome. It can be quite worthwhile to shop around for hotel prices, as you may be able to find significant discounts off the list price. Some Roman hosts offer their spare rooms to visitors, generally for a much lower price than an equivalent hotel room. Hotels in the downtown are costly, but a good apartment is a decent alternative, especially for couples and if you don't mind cooking yourself from time to time: it will save even more of your budget.
