Hong Kong has a complete range of hotel choices in all price categories, from luxurious five-star suites to deluxe mid-priced hotels and clean, comfortable rooms even in the budget category. However, five-star hotels in Hong Kong are generally cheaper than in other major cities such as New York City, Paris or London, though rooms are usually much smaller than their Western counterparts. Besides luxury five-star hotels, there are also a variety of more affordable hotels, guest houses, backpacker hostels, and holiday camps. All hotel bills in Hong Kong are subject to 10% service charge and 3% government tax.

Budget hotels and Mid-range

For budget-minded adventurers, there are numerous cheap hostels, called guesthouses, located throughout Hong Kong but mostly concentrated in southern Kowloon. Where possible, you should always book ahead. Insist on seeing the room you're going to be staying in first. The Garden Hostel is popular with the backpacking crowd, including four bed dorms and comfy sofas and a selection of second hand books.

Luxury hotels

Hong Kong has some of the most extravagant hotels in the world, most expensive luxury accommodations are on Hong Kong Island. The Island Shangri-La hotel is one of three elegantly appointed 5-star hotels at the conveniently located Pacific Place complex. It combines wonderful opulence with all the amenities of the best business hotels. Rooms in hues of orange and red are warm and spacious, with outstanding views of either the Peak or the Harbour.
